The Competition is open to all villages with populations up to 6,000. There are three different categories based on village size: Small, Medium and Large. There is also a special award for best ‘newcomer’ to the competition. Each category carries prize money of £250. In addition to this, the prize money for the overall winner will be £1000.
The closing date is Thursday 16th March 2017.
The judges are looking at all aspects of village life:
- community and social activities
- local communication
- the village website
- the provision for young people and more senior residents
- the involvement of local businesses
- general tidiness
- the welcome given to visitors
They are also looking for villages that can demonstrate enterprise, initiative and community spirit in how the village cares for its inhabitants and how the village is looked after. They want to know not only what has been done in the past few years to help the community, but also about plans for this year.
We have found that most successful villages in the competition have a group working on their application form rather than an individual. For this reason, we are circulating the application forms to Parish Clerks, Village Hall Secretaries and local WI groups in order to make the competition more widely publicised within the village and hope that between these and other interested parties within the village, a small group can be formed who would be able to put an application together. Any such group should advise the Parish Council that an application is to be made.
Completing the registration form and application form provides an invaluable audit of village life and the people who do this will find it a rewarding and worthwhile experience in bringing residents together and realising the range and vibrancy of activities that take place. And, who knows, you might even win a very worthwhile competition prize of £250!
Entry to the competition and the possibility of winning carries a considerable “feel good” effect into the village as a whole, as well as gaining high profile across Northamptonshire!
We welcome digital entries sent by email, but if you are doing a paper copy and you feel more space is required, please feel free to attach a single extra sheet of paper and number the answers.
If you are entering the competition, we would be very grateful if you could send us a sketch map showing the location of the facilities within the village, as this will greatly assist the judges. The judges will be visiting between mid-April and early June 2017. They will make contact to arrange their visit, which will last a maximum of two and a half hours only; during this visit, they will be pleased to meet people from a wide cross-section of the community.
The winners will be announced at the Presentation Evening on Tuesday 18th July at the High Barn, Hunsbury Hill Centre, Harksome Hill, Northampton. NN4 9QX
If you have any queries or need assistance please contact Barron Walton, Co-ordinator Northamptonshire Best Village Competition via email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone on 01327 312950.
Please complete and return both forms and the applications fee to Northamptonshire ACRE by Thursday 16th March 2017 to enter. Good Luck!
We look forward to receiving your entry for 2017.
