NCC consulting on closure of up to 28 libraries across the county
Northamptonshire County Council, which needs to claw back £115m in savings over the next four years, has proposed plans to close up to 28 of the county's 36 libraries. 3 options are being put forward for consultation:
- Option 1 would see the development of a community-managed library model to be offered to all other current library communities. Community groups will be invited to run 21 smaller libraries around the county, saving the council £290,000 next year. Option1 would also see 15 libraries being retained and further developed as community hubs – 8 large libraries (Corby Cube, Kettering, Wellingborough, Abington Street (Northampton) Weston Favell, Rushden, Daventry and Towcester) and 7 medium libraries.
- Option 2 does not include the development of a community-manager model but does see the 15 libraries being retained and developed as community hubs.
- Option 3 would see only 8 large libraries retained and developed as community hubs, meaning 28 out of the 36 libraries will be closed.
- With all 3 options, the Mobile Library service will be withdrawn and replaced by extending the Library to You service. And all remaining libraries will be closed including the universal Chidren's Centres services that are delivered in those libraries (21 in total).
You can give your views about the proposed options in the consultation the Council is carrying out. There is more information on the County Council website and an online survey that you can complete. You can also email or write to the Council and it is possible to submit a petition to the Council about the closures.
The consultation closes at 5pm on 13 January 2018.
Alternatively there is a group that proposes an 'Option 4 - Libraries for Life' that proposes keeping ALL of Northamptonshire's libraries properly funded, in permanent public ownership, with professionally trained staff to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service for the benefit of all in the area that want to make use of it.
