Heating oil pressures continue: what rural Northamptonshire households need to know
Rural households across Northamptonshire are feeling the impact of rising heating oil costs, as global events continue to create uncertainty in fuel markets. Northants ACRE is aware of growing concern, especially for households that rely on oil as their main heating source.
Why prices are rising
Local suppliers report demand for heating oil is at levels not seen before. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has made fuel markets highly volatile, and as a result:
- Many suppliers are unable to provide advance pricing.
- Final prices are only confirmed on the day of delivery, based on market rates.
- Forecasts can change dramatically, even from hour to hour.
Industry data shows that predicted increases have swung from just a few pence per litre to double-digit rises in a short time. In some cases, overnight predictions suggested spikes of up to 30p per litre, demonstrating how unpredictable the market currently is.
Current costs and delivery delays
Across the UK, heating oil prices have risen sharply, with some suppliers reporting costs exceeding £1 per litre, and in some areas between £1.30 and £1.50.
While supply remains available, delivery times have lengthened due to high demand. Households may now face waits of up to three weeks for their orders.
Many customers are placing orders sooner or more frequently due to concerns over further price rises, which in turn adds to the pressure on deliveries.
Practical advice for households
Residents can take some steps to manage heating oil use and costs:
- Lower the thermostat slightly where possible.
- Check tank levels regularly rather than relying solely on gauges.
- Consider ordering smaller quantities to manage budgets.
- Look out for neighbours, particularly those who may be vulnerable
Local authority support for residents
West Northamptonshire Council’s interim support scheme: This temporary emergency programme helps residents who use heating oil and are at risk of running out before they can afford a delivery. Assistance can include vouchers that can be redeemed to contribute towards oil costs. You can read the full press release here: Interim support for households relying on heating oil (West Northamptonshire Council).
Support available through Groundwork
Northants ACRE is working with partner organisation Groundwork to provide additional support.
Residents can access free advice via Groundwork’s Green Doctor programme, which offers practical help to:
- Improve energy efficiency in the home.
- Reduce household energy bills.
- Stay warm during colder months.
Anyone concerned about heating costs is encouraged to contact the Green Doctor programme to see what support is available.

Looking ahead
Much will depend on developments in the Middle East, which continue to influence global fuel markets. With so many factors at play, predicting future price movements remains difficult.
Fortunately, spring is approaching, and milder temperatures may reduce the need for heating oil, easing some of the current pressure on rural households.
Northants ACRE will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the market evolves.
